History & Significance of Emirati Women’s Day
Fondly known as the Mother of the Nation, Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak commemorated Emirates Women’s Day for the first time on 15th August 2015. She then chose the date to be August 28 as it honours the founding of the UAE’s General Women’s Union which was launched on August 28, 1975.
She dons many hats as the Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood & Childhood and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation. She is a strong supporter of adult literacy initiatives and the provision of free public education for girls. She was also honoured by the International Humanitarian Organisation for her endeavours toward women’s rights and equality.
Well, ever since, UAE Emirati Women's Day has been celebrated to highlight the contributions of Emirati women and applaud their dedication, strength and achievements that have helped to shape the nation.
Emirati Women’s Day 2023 Theme
Every year, Emirati Women’s Day focuses on a different theme to emphasise the achievements of women in the Emirates. This year’s theme is ‘Inspiring Reality... Sustainable Future.’ While announcing the theme for the year 2023, Sheikh Fatima spoke fondly and proudly of UAE women by adding, “Emirati women have demonstrated that there is no endeavour that is impossible, owing to their hard work and inventiveness."
Since society is becoming more and more female-oriented, the theme primarily encourages women to work hard and achieve their goals as the conditions are more favourable than ever before. It’s their chance to make the most of it.
All in all, it’s a perfect day to pamper and celebrate the spirit of womanhood. People send tokens of appreciation in the form of Women’s Day gifts, share Women’s Day quotes & messages across different channels. They also organise cultural events to celebrate all the fantastic women who are setting benchmarks & inspiring others.
